Upon his ascension to the Bat mantle, Azrael almost immediately used extreme violence to dispense his own brand of justice in Gotham. After Batman was broken by Bane, Valley donned a distinctly '90s version of the cape and cowl, designed by The System. During this time The System slowly began corrupting his mind again. However, when the events of Knightfall began, while Batman was away rounding up Gotham's criminals, Valley was left in the Batcave.
